NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announces cloud-based, virtualized Kepler GPU technology

We’re here at NVIDIA’s GPU technology conference here in San Jose, California and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang just let loose that his company plans to put Kepler in the cloud. To make it happen, the company has created a virtualized Kepler GPU, meaning no physical connections are needed to render and stream graphics to remote locations. So, as Citrix brought CPU virtualization to the device of your choosing, NVIDIA has brought the power of Kepler to everything from iPads to Windows PCs.

More than 70 percent of mobile users pay little for apps, big spenders make up for us cheapskates

We know smartphone and tablet owners like to buy games. But if you go by a new ABI exploration of user habits, most of us aren’t buying much of anything. More than 70 percent of the crowd spends little to nothing on mobile apps, dragging down the average of spent per month among paying customers to a median of .50 when you include the skinflints. As you might imagine, that leaves the remaining 30 percent making up for a lot of slack: three percent of downloaders represent a fifth of all the spending in the mobile app world. Researchers suggest that developers focus on a long-term strategy of freemium pricing or utility apps to get more customers buying, but we imagine that writing more games about catapulting frustrated birds might just work out on its own.

Mozilla and Google ARMwrestle Microsoft

Posted on May 14th, 2012 by TheTechArena in Latest Technology News

Mozilla and Google are challenging Microsoft’s decision to shut out all browsers other than Internet Explorer from Windows 8 devices that use ARM processors. This restricts user choice, reduces competition, chills innovation, and might have antitrust implications, among other bad things, Mozilla general counsel Harvey Anderson asserted. Google reportedly shares Mozilla’s concerns. “Mozilla’s beef is focused on what Windows 8′s going to play,” said Jim McGregor, president of Tirias Research.

Acer Liquid Glow hits the FCC, keeps its secrets

Posted on May 13th, 2012 by TheTechArena in Latest Technology News

Acer’s Liquid series phones only occasionally reach the FCC, so it’s with some surprise that we’ve just spotted the still-fresh Liquid Glow getting the US agency’s approval under its E330 model name. Details are scarce as to whether or not there’s been any changes made to the Android 4.0 phone on its way out of Taiwan, however: there’s no telltale signs like cellular frequencies or carrier badging. If anything, Acer is hoping to keep information hush-hush by stamping a 180-day confidentiality seal on the manual and photos. It’s entirely possible that this is the international GSM model with no 3G support for North American carriers, so we wouldn’t get worked up about local release plans. Even so, knowing Canadian carrier Rogers’ tendency to offer Acer phones, there’s still a possibility that a version of the Liquid Glow might go on sale this side of the Pacific.

NVIDIA confirms no ‘Project Grey’ until 2013, Tegra 3 LTE later this year

Posted on May 12th, 2012 by TheTechArena in Latest Technology News

NVIDIA confirms no 'Project Grey' until 2013, Tegra 3 LTE later this yearWhile earnings calls are rarely the veritable dial-in party, sometimes they do toss up a juicy gambit or disappointing revelation. While NVIDIA was dishing out projections for Q1 2013, it pretty much quashed any hopes of seeing an in-house LTE Tegra chip in 2012. While we were assured that Tegra 3 LTE phones would come this year — based on those partnerships announced back in February — it was also stated that the thoroughbred Tegra LTE chip wouldn’t be a reality until 2013. So, this pretty much ties in with what we had heard, but this time, from the horse’s mouth.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says mobile apps the top focus, we say it’s about time

Posted on May 12th, 2012 by TheTechArena in Latest Technology News

Mister Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook has been making a lot of promises during a tour to drum up interest in its ever-nearing IPO, but the one gadget-heads have been wanting to hear the most, a commitment to its mobile apps, has been elusive — until now. Everyone’s favorite hooded CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is telling investors in his home ‘burg of the San Francisco Bay that mobile is front and center in his company’s plans. We’re hoping that means new app features, although Zuck is likely referring to money-making as well: shareholders are jittery knowing that Facebook makes most of its money on web ads that it’s not running on smartphones and tablets. Paid titles in App Center will go a long way towards scratching that itch, mind you. As for us, we’ll just be happy if Facebook takes less than a year and a half to produce a major tablet app.

The Thompson Crisis: Sloppy Whopper or Poor Career Personal Hygiene?

Posted on May 11th, 2012 by TheTechArena in Latest Technology News

It’s been more than a week since Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson’s resume blew up in his face, and by the looks of things, the Yahoo board isn’t bothered by it. They’re not bothered enough to fire the guy, anyway. Thompson’s still in charge at Yahoo, and a week’s worth of morale-melting embarrassment and haranguing from Dan Loeb haven’t been enough to change that. Loeb, manager of hedge fund Third Point, has been taking shots at Yahoo’s board for months. His group owns about 6 percent of Yahoo shares, and he wants a seat at the board’s table. Last week, it seemed he might have found a silver bullet.
